PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Guinea sorrel or Hibiscus Sabdariffa is originally an African plant, first cultivated in Southeast Asia. Better known as bissap in Senegal, foléré in Cameroon, dableni in Mali, djismma tchiré in Benin, Ngaï Ngaï in Congo-Brazza and in Congo Kinshasa, karkadé in Egypt, it is only in the 19th century that its culture was brought and developed in West Africa. It is a fast-growing plant whose flowers have a very short life span, of one day on average. Therefore, the harvest should be done soon after blooming, ideally in the morning after dew evaporation, during a dry and sunny day.

After fading, the hibiscus flowers fall and only a bright red fruit of about 15 to 20 mm in diameter remains on the stem, called the calyx. This calyx is mainly used in the making of bissap juice. Hibiscus usually blooms from July to October. During this period, the hibiscus flowers will be harvested and two of these parts, the petals and the fruit will be dried in the sun or in an oven at 50°C or at a much lower temperature for a few minutes or even hours. Once dried, your hibiscus flowers or bissap are ready to be consumed.
